Philosophy Statement
In acknowledging the fact that our community is isolated and
engulfs a unique culture, it is a major concern of our school to present to our
students opportunities and responsibilities of the American way of life. It is
essential that the faculty prepare the student body to relate successfully to
an ever changing democratic society on and off the Navajo Reservation.
In accepting the fact that our students are active members
of a unique community, residing in a boarding school setting during the
academic year, it is the obligation of the school to educate the students to
develop competency in communication and the encourage social interaction among
the student population.
We further acknowledge the preparation for effective
citizenship in our constantly changing world requires an understanding and a
comprehension of science, natural recourses, and technology that demonstrate
significant influence on traditional and modern life.
In establishing the education background needed in our cross
cultural society, the school must provide students with knowledge, skills, and
attitudes which meet a multi-cultural environment. All Native American students
have the rights and responsibilities to choose their future and should not be
denied the opportunity to practice their cultural values.
We further believe that the responsibility of the
educational system should be to promote the development of the students’
intellectual, social, physical, and aesthetic potential.
The educational system should also provide the necessary
guidance that allows each individual to make decisions with the understanding
that the quality of life in
The educational system is also responsible for providing
equal social and educational opportunities for all students by offering a wide
range of activities and special programs.
In overcoming obstacles in development caused by language,
social and geographic isolation the school will provide educational programs
that encourage lifetime learning, individual excellence and success despite
differences in potential, interest, and needs.
It is our belief that development of these ideas will
promote a progressive atmosphere for students, staff and community for
achievement for common goals.
